Not So Far Fetched - Michelle
Like many of Mr. Huston's books this book is more than the title. I found most fascinating the number of wildly successful people that followed this advice. Appears to be a good map for those that find college not desirable. Two atta-a-boys!
Fantastic - DeducantTeAngeli
Wonderful food for thought, really.
If this option is too scary, you can always burn yourself out by homeschooling your kids & hope to churn out little classically trained geniuses who can win full scholarships (my current plan…..woooohoo!). Hopefully a flat in Paris with the saved money will serve as ample therapy for Mom. I’ll let them visit me, maybe…but I won’t share my croissant.
The Current Cost of College is Unsustainable - Leslie
In his own humorous and inimitable way, Jimmy Huston is making a serious point with this book. The cost of college is absurd. We are telling our kids that they have to saddle themselves with a lifetime of debt right out of the starting gate. We are limiting the choices, and raising the stress level, of college graduates at a time they should be free to find their own path to becoming a contributing member of society. Many will never be able to buy a house, a new car, or start a family. Upward mobility is next to impossible when you are yoked to a mountain of debt. No wonder young people are angry. It's time to start paying attention to this problem. Mr. Huston's tongue in cheek approach is a good way to start the conversation.
Funny and Unexpectedly Persuasive - Paul R.
Having read some of Mr. Huston’s other books, I was expecting more of his droll wit. I was not disappointed. What I wasn’t expecting was such a persuasive argument against the conventional wisdom of going to college. As a parent with a child in 9th grade, this book definitely got me thinking. I recommend it as a funny, interesting read. I especially recommend it to parents of high school students with impending decisions about college and life beyond high school.
College is Not for All - DS
This is a very timely book. As the author points out, unless you can justify the cost of college by your expected salary you need to rethink your choices. Of course, if you have billionaire parents then you have nothing to worry about and you can go to college and Europe. But seriously this book makes many valid suggestions. Mr. Huston is by one of my favorite authors, I enjoy his books, they are satirical and filled with facts and thinking points and my husband enjoyed the illustrated style of the artwork selected.
Parents, use the kids' College Funds to enjoy Europe yourselves! - Maryhelen A Delane
As usual, Mr. Huston, with his tongue in cheek humor, made me laugh out loud! Having put three children through private colleges (one continuing on to earn an MBA), I now realize (thanks to Mr. Huston), we should have told them to get jobs or pay their own way, while we went to Europe, financed by their College Funds!
Looking forward to the next book!
Good Practical Advice for Teens (and their parents) - Marts
This book hits the right tone. We don’t all need to go to college at today’s high cost. You can live in Europe cheaper and learn more. When you’re ready to return (and you will be in a year or two) you can go to college then... and you’ll have a more focused idea of what you really want to do/be. Thiseasy-to-read- book explains it all.
Don't leave this lying around if you have kids in high school - Philip C.
It's a grand idea. After all, the grand tour was the "finishing school" for the elite and you were set if your daughter captured the heart of landed gentry. Written for laughs, there's a lot of wisdom here. Perhaps you could negotiate a compromise: A cheaper state college with summer abroad.
Another clever Jimmy Huston offering - Ed S.
"Don't Go To College, Go To Europe for Less" - an inventive and fun read, with underlying relevant comment. Made me wish my parents read this in 1960 before they sent me off to college instead of Europe. Of course in those days college was free.
Buy two copies! - Monica
Cute, yet poignant book. Jimmy hits the reality mark yet again. I'd definitely recommend reading!
